Nimes – which has around 150,000 inhabitants – is the main town in the department of Gard, which is part of the region Languedoc-Roussillon. The city is about. 125 km northwest of Marseille – and it has a very rich history, something that increasingly characterize the townscape.
Some of the attractions of Nimes consists of well-preserved monuments from Roman times – eg. the elliptical amphitheater the Arena from the first century BCKr., The 2000 year old temple Maison Carree and Aqueduct Pont du Gard (which is approx. 20 km northeast of the city and is on UNESCO’s World Heritage list).
Nimes is also the exciting contemporary architecture to show up – including art gallery Carré d’Art (built in 1986, opposite the temple Maison Carree) and the post-modern residential complex Neamausus.
