Greifswald is located in northeastern Germany, by the river Ryck which flows into the Baltic Sea.The town has 54,000 inhabitants (2007) and belongs to the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Greifswald is a seaport, industrial and university city, which also has a rich cultural life – in theater, museums and several historical buildings. The University was founded in 1456 and is one of the oldest in Europe.
In the Altstadt – Old Town – there are many beautiful medieval buildings. Some of the most visited is St. Mary’s Church, James Church and the Church of St. Nicholas – all from 1200 – and 1300’s. The Marktplatz with the Town Hall from 1400-century’s worth a visit.
A major tourist attraction in Greifswald is Pommersches Landes Museum – a museum with exhibits in the areas of geology, archeology, folklore and art.
A few miles east of town lies the fishing village of Wieck is a popular destination for tourists in Greifswald. Wieck has a pleasant maritime atmosphere – and here there are several picturesque fishermen’s houses and monastery ruins Eldena from 1199.
