The main town Hermoupolis (Ermoupolis) is located on the east coast and has 13,400 inhabitants. Hermoupolis is a major port with ferry services to many other Greek cities.
The main town has several historical sites, including City Hall from 1876, The Archaeological Museum – with finds from the Bronze Age, Metamorphosis Cathedral from 1824, the beautiful Ayios Nikolaos church from 1850 with a blue dome, and the manor Velissaropoulos – an impressive building with wall paintings.
